SONGER STUDIO
THE STARS SHINE AT THE 13TH ANNUAL TALENT SHOW
IT STARTED QUITE HARMLESSLY. ERIC SONGER WAS GOING TO SEE THE EDEN PRAIRIE CENTRAL MIDDLE SCHOOL TALENT SHOW DURING THE 2000-2001 SCHOOL YEAR. HIS GIRLFRIEND AT THE TIME, HEIDI, WAS ONE OF THE TEACHERS ORGANIZING THE SHOW. ERIC WAS EXPECTING A CUTE LITTLE MIDDLE SCHOOL SHOW. INSTEAD HE SAW A PRODUCTION THAT RIVALED MOST HIGH SCHOOL STAGE PERFORMANCES. THE STUDENTS ON STAGE, THE LIGHTS AND SOUND, THE TICKETS, THE PROGRAMS...EVERYTHING WAS AMAZING.

SO THE WHEELS BEGAN TO TURN. WHY CAN’T CHASKA MIDDLE SCHOOL WEST DO THIS? ERIC BEGAN TO MAKE PLANS FOR THIS TO HAPPEN, BUT HE LEARNED THAT HE WOULD BE TRAVELING BETWEEN SCHOOLS AND DECIDED AGAINST ORGANIZING A BIG EVENT FOR ONE OF THE SCHOOLS HE TAUGHT AT BUT NOT THE OTHER ONE. THIS CONTINUED THE FOLLOWING SCHOOL YEAR, BUT ONCE ERIC WAS BACK AT WEST FULL TIME IN 2003-04, HE PRESENTED THE IDEA TO STUDENT COUNCIL. HIS HOPE WAS THAT STUDENTS WOULD TAKE AND RUN WITH THE IDEA, BUT IT WASN’T THAT EASY.

AFTER ANOTHER FAILED ATTEMPT THE FOLLOWING YEAR, ERIC DECIDED TO TAKE A DIFFERENT APPROACH. HE INFORMED THE 8TH GRADE BAND MEMBERS THAT THEY WERE GOING TO RUN A SCHOOL WIDE SHOW THAT WOULD TAKE PLACE IN THE WINTER OF 2006. EVERY STUDENT WOULD SIGN UP FOR A COMMITTEE AND RUN PART OF THE SHOW. THESE COMMITTEES WOULD INCLUDE AUDITIONS, TICKETS, PROGRAMS, HOSTING, PERFORMING, USHERING, LIGHTS, SOUND, BACKSTAGE AND PROMOTION. WITH THE ORGANIZATION OF THE SHOW NOW BASICALLY PART OF THE CURRICULUM, THE SHOW BEGAN TO MATERIALIZE.

ON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2006, THE FIRST ANNUAL CMSW TALENT SHOW TOOK PLACE AT CHASKA HIGH SCHOOL. IT WAS AS AMAZING AS ERIC HAD HOPED IT WOULD BE. STUDENTS RAN EVERYTHING. HE SIMPLY SAT BACKSTAGE AND WATCHED EVERYBODY DO THEIR ROLE. THE SHOW HE HAD SEEN FIVE YEARS EARLIER A FEW MILES DOWN THE ROAD WAS NOW HAPPENING IN HIS DISTRICT.

ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 12 AT 7 P.M. AT CHANHASSEN HIGH SCHOOL, THE SHOW TOOK PLACE FOR THE 13TH CONSECUTIVE YEAR. THERE HAVE BEEN MINOR CHANGES OVER THE YEARS BUT THE TALENT SHOW CONTINUES TO AMAZE AUDIENCES. THE SHOW OFFERS STUDENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN HOW TO RUN A PRODUCTION. FOR SOME STUDENTS, IT’S A GREAT CHANCE TO LEARN HOW TO RUN SOUND AND LIGHTS OR GIVE THEM ANOTHER CHANCE TO PERFORM. FOR SOME, IT’S A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO WORK AS A TEAM AND TO PUT SOMETHING TOGETHER MUCH GREATER THAN THEMSELVES. FOR THE SCHOOL, IT OFFERS STUDENTS A GREAT SENSE OF PRIDE AND ACCOMPLISHMENT. THE SHOW ALSO SERVES AS A FUNDRAISER FOR THE BAND PROGRAM. IT’S A WIN-WIN ANY WAY YOU LOOK AT IT.

THIS YEAR WAS NO DIFFERENT AS 25 ACTS PERFORMED AND OVER 100 STUDENTS WERE INVOLVED IN THE PRODUCTION OF THE SHOW.
