SONGER STUDIO
SCHOOL OF ROCK
School of Rock is a course designed for middle school students to learn the basics of playing in a rock band.    The class is taught by Heidi Songer and Eric Songer.  It typically includes appearances by guest artists who are local rock musicians in the Twin Cities.  Guests have included Kris Stauffer, Kevin Mills, Matt Patrick, Jason Price and George Peoples.  The next session of School of Rock will be in the Fall of 2019 meeting on Thursdays and is open to students in grades 6-8.

The class includes five sessions.   Below is a description of what is taught at each session:

Week One:  introduction to rock guitar including chord and tab style playing as well as solo ideas based around the pentatonic scale, introduction to rock keyboarding skills including chord and note style playing as well as voicing suggestions and solo ideas.

Week Two:  introduction to rock vocal styles including basic voice technique and proper sound production, matching pitch, and creating harmonies; introduction to rock bass playing including how to realize a bass line and how to read tabs, chords and notes; introduction to drum set including how to play a basic rock feel, keeping a steady tempo, simplifying and complicating basic rock styles and fills

Week Three:  form bands and play a basic song chosen by instructors.  Students get a chance to play instrument in the band that they choose.  Band listens to song; talks about form, chord progression, melody, solos, individual instrumental parts and begins rehearsing

Week Four:  continuation of Week Three but this time band members choose songs they would like to learn with instructor’s guidance

Week Five:  continuation of the past two weeks.  Sometimes we record final product so students can take home a copy of their work

Other than Beginning Guitar, School of Rock was the first non-traditional music class offered by Songer Studio.  The first School of Rock class was met with incredible demand in the spring of 2004.  The class was offered at least twice a year for the next five years.  In the fall of 2004, it spawned the incredibly successful performance-based Garage Band ensemble for experienced musicians.  Hip Hop Academy and the new Hip Hop and Electronica courses that Songer Studio offers are also modeled after School of Rock.  With the performance based Garage Band as the middle school’s main vehicle for giving students who play rock music an opportunity to perform, School of Rock is now a great way to prepare students to play in the Garage Band.  The class is now open to students who are in grades 6-8.

The next session of School of Rock is meeting in the Fall of 2019 in the CMSW Band Room.  Sign up at www.ce4all.org. http://www.ce4all.org/shapeimage_3_link_0
