SONGER STUDIO
ROCK-IT! 2018 RETURNS FEBRUARY 2
MANY MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS LOOK FOR ACTIVITIES THAT THEY ENJOY AND FIND SUCCESS WITH. THIS MIGHT BE A SPORT, AN ART, SCOUTS, OR CHURCH-BASED ACTIVITIES. FOR ERIC SONGER, IT WAS WRITING A MAGAZINE.

THE MEMORY IS STILL VERY CLEAR FOR ERIC. IN FIFTH GRADE, HE WAS IN PHY ED, AND THE TEACHER TURNED ON THE RADIO WHILE THE CLASS ENGAGED IN AN ACTIVITY. A SONG CALLED “ELECTRIC AVENUE” BY EDDY GRANT CAME ON, AND ERIC WAS MESMERIZED. HIS CURIOSITY WAS PEAKED IN A DIFFERENT WAY THAN OTHER “NORMAL” PEOPLE WHEN A COOL SONG COMES ON THE RADIO. ERIC WANTED TO KNOW WHAT OTHER SONGS WERE MOST POPULAR, HOW THESE SONGS WERE RANKED AND HOW THESE ARTISTS MADE IT IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS.

WHAT FOLLOWED WAS A STRANGE SERIES OF EVENTS. ERIC BEGAN LISTENING TO “AMERICAN TOP 40” WITH CASEY KASEM EVERY WEEK FOR THE ENTIRE FOUR-HOUR PROGRAM. HE WROTE DOWN ALL THE STATS, RECORDED THE SONGS ON HIS BOOM BOX AND THEN PROCEEDED TO WRITE A MAGAZINE EVERY WEEK CALLED ROCK-IT! THIS MAGAZINE WAS HANDWRITTEN AND INCLUDED ARTICLES ABOUT THE ARTISTS, PICTURES CUT OUT FROM “ROLLING STONE” AND “USA TODAY” AND OF COURSE THE CHARTS.

ERIC THEN USED HIS COPY MACHINE TO REPRODUCE ROCK-IT! AND HAND IT OUT AT SCHOOL TO HIS PEERS. THIS CONTINUED FROM THE END OF 5TH GRADE THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF 10TH GRADE. NOT ONE WEEK WAS MISSED. THIS WAS ERIC’S WAY TO CONNECT WITH FRIENDS AND TO DO SOMETHING HE LOVED.

FAST FORWARD TO 2013. ERIC WAS LOOKING FOR A WAY TO FEATURE THE DISTRICT 112 GARAGE BANDS AND COUNTRY BANDS WHICH PLAY HIT SONGS IN A CREATIVE FASHION. HE COLLABORATED WITH ROB REBERTUS (INDUSTRIAL ARTS), BRIAN THOMPSON (ART) AND COLIN SLABY (TECHNOLOGY) AT HIS SCHOOL TO PUT TOGETHER AN INTERDISCIPLINARY EVENT THAT FEATURED NOT ONLY THE STUDENT BANDS, BUT STUDENT ARTISTS, CREATORS AND TECHNOLOGY GURUS. THE SET, SOUND, LIGHTS, VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS AND EVEN THE FOOD IS ALL CREATED BY STUDENTS. WHEN TRYING TO COME UP WITH A NAME FOR THE EVENT, ERIC REMEMBERED HIS CREATIVE WAY TO FEATURE MUSIC GROWING UP AND CALLED THE CONCERT ROCK-IT!

THIS YEAR ROCK-IT! TAKES PLACE FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 2 AT 7:30 P.M. AT CHASKA MIDDLE SCHOOL WEST. IT WILL BE AN AMAZING NIGHT WITH INCREDIBLY TALENTED STUDENTS PERFORMING ROCK, COUNTRY AND POP MUSIC. BANDS, ARTISTS, DJ’S AND DANCERS ALL WILL TAKE TO THE STAGE TO AWE THE AUDIENCE. THERE WILL BE AN OPPORTUNITY TO DONATE TO “PENNIES FOR PATIENTS” WHICH IS CHASKA MIDDLE SCHOOL WEST’S PROGRAM TO RAISE MONEY TO HELP FIGHT AND HELP KIDS WITH CHILDHOOD CANCER. ADMISSION IS FREE AND YOU ARE GUARANTEED TO HAVE FUN.
