SONGER STUDIO
JAZZ ENSEMBLE
The District 112 Mid-Level Jazz Ensembles are open to all band students in grades 6-8 at the three district middle schools.  The District 112 Summer Jazz Ensemble is directed by Eric Songer.  CMSW Jazz 7 and Jazz 8 meet during the school year once a week from November through March/April and are co-directed by Gina Ford & Eric Songer.  The bands perform at the District 112 Jazz Festival the first Saturday in February, the CMSW Talent Show (Jazz 8 only), one or two collegiate jazz festivals, CMSW Evening with the Stars, and the Big Band Extravaganza.  The Summer Jazz Ensemble performs at Chaska River City Days the final Saturday of July. Jazz 6 is directed by Gina Ford and also meets once a week during the school year. The band performs at the District 112 Jazz Festival, CMSW Evening with the Stars and the Big Band Extravaganza.

The District 112 Mid-Level Jazz programs features jazz bands at all three middle schools.  Each middle school offers either a 6th grade jazz band along with a 7th/8th grade jazz band or one combined jazz band.  The goal is for our students to learn the basics about jazz music.  This includes performance aspects such as style, articulation, form, improvisation, theory, tonguing, and voicings.  It also includes listening and analyzing music and learning history.

The middle school jazz band was started by Mr. Fox in the mid-1970s.  Mr. Songer expanded the jazz band program to include all three grades in 1997.  When the district expanded to two middle schools in 2002, jazz bands were offered at both schools.  For awhile, a mid-level honor jazz band called Jazz One was offered.  When a third middle school opened in 2009, each school formed their own jazz program.  CMSW had a Jazz 6 and Jazz 78 until 2015 when the program expanded to three jazz bands (one per grade). The summer jazz program was created in 2007.

Jazz 78 (or Jazz 1, Jazz 8) has performed at the Talent Show since it’s inception in 2005. The top band has attended collegiate jazz festivals every year (Mankato, Duluth, Eau Claire). The Big Band Extravaganza ran from 2014-17.

The current session of jazz band meets Thursdays from 3:40-4:30 p.m from Oct. 25-Apr. 4 at CMSW. Sign up at www.ce4all.org. http://www.ce4all.org/shapeimage_3_link_0
