HONOR BAND
The District 112 Mid-Level Honor Band is open to selected band students in grades 7-8 at the three district middle schools.  The band is directed by the middle school instrumental music staff:  Gina Ford, Matt Potter, Scott Prescott and Eric Songer.  The band is chosen in February and meets once a week after school from early March through the end of the school year.  The band traditionally plays a concert the final week of the school year and also takes a tour of district elementary schools.

The band provides advanced and motivated music students an opportunity to perform in an ensemble that requires stronger musical skill and maturity.  The music selections tend to include high school and very advanced middle school literature.  Students are given the opportunity to develop their skills as well as get to know other motivated students in the district.

The Honor Band was created by Barry Fox in the mid-1980s for advanced 8th grade students.  In 1998, Paul Swanson and Eric Songer started a 7th grade Honor Band.  When the district moved to a 6th/7th grade building and a 8th/9th grade building, more music staff were involved in forming a 6th/7th grade honor band and a 8th/9th grade honor band.  In 2002 when the district created two 6th through 8th grade middle schools, Barry Fox established the 7th/8th grade Honor Band in what has remained its current configuration.  The band now offered students a chance to get to know musicians from “the other” middle school.  When Barry Fox retired in 2007, Sarah Minette and Eric Songer directed the band.  The directors now rotate amongst the current four middle school instrumental music directors.  This past year, Gina Ford and Eric Songer were directing the group. In 2018, there was a 6th grade Honor Band for the first time. The bands performed together at their spring concert in June of that year.

The next session of Honor Band meets on Thursdays after school from March 21 through May 30. 7th/8th Grade Honor Band will meet at one of the middle schools from 3:45-4:45 p.m. and will directed by two middle school directors.  They will perform at a tour of elementary schools on Friday, May 31 and perform an evening concert at Chanhassen High School on Monday, June 3 at 7 p.m. The 6th grade Honor Band will meet at one of the middle schools from 3:45-4:45 p.m. and will be directed by two of the middle school band directors. They will perform at the same evening concert on June 3. Check out highlights of a recent Honor Band concert here.https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=Eaai_D9nMAwshapeimage_3_link_0
