SONGER STUDIO
HIP HOP ACADEMY
The District 112 Hip Hop Academy is open to students in grades 6-8 at the three district middle schools.  The class is directed by Eric Songer.  Guest clinicians such as Tish Jones and DJ Freddy Fresh are often invited to help out students.  The group meets in the winter once a week.  The group has performed at the Eden Prairie Center Celebrate Schools event in October and at the Rock-It! concert in January.

Hip House Academy is open to students who sing, play keyboards, MC, DJ, rap, create music electronically, play bass guitar and play drum set.  The group typically works on a combination of covering existing songs, coming up with original works, and creating mashups.  In addition to learning the music so that the bands can perform, students learn a wealth of music knowledge including theory, chord progressions, form, soloing techniques, reading music/chords/tabs, listening and imitating, current technology in electronica music, turntable technique and more.  We also spend time teaching students the history of hip hop and electronica music, stage presence in live performance and how to record.

The class began as Hip Hop Academy in the fall of 2007.  It was an exploratory class that was not performance based although some of the members performed at the 2008 Minnesota Music Educators Conference and at a now defunct event called the VIP Lunch at Chaska Middle School West.  The class started as just a hip hop oriented course but was opened up to electronica in the fall of 2011 after a year hiatus from being offered in 2010.  This next offering of the class in 2012 was the first time it was offered as a performance based course. It continued in this form in 2013.  In 2015, the class was expanded to include Freddy Fresh as a co-teacher of the course. Students could attend DJ sessions and also take part in the live band which performed at the Big Band Extravaganza. There were also many more opportunities given to students to DJ throughout the year. The class has returned to its Hip Hop Academy name and focuses on DJ techniques, using digital audio workstations to create music and some live band situations.

The current session of the course meets on Mondays Oct. 15-Nov. 19 from 3:45-4:45 p.m. at CMSW. Sign up at www.ce4all.org http://www.ce4all.org/shapeimage_3_link_0
