BIRTH OF A BAND
WHEN HEIDI AND ERIC SONGER STARTED THE GARAGE BAND PROGRAM IN DISTRICT 112 BACK IN 2004, ONE OF THE THOUGHTS WAS THAT THE KIDS WOULD ESTABLISH CONNECTIONS AND DEVELOP SKILLS THAT WOULD ALLOW THEM TO KEEP BANDS GOING AFTER MIDDLE SCHOOL.  

ALTHOUGH THERE ARE SOME GREAT EXAMPLES OF STUDENTS OVER THE PAST 13 YEARS WHO HAVE DONE THAT, OVERWHELMINGLY STUDENTS AND PARENTS HAVE ASKED US TO BUILD A HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM.  FIVE YEARS AGO WE STARTED A HIGH SCHOOL GARAGE BAND THAT BECAME AN INSTANT HIT.  THE BAND HAS DOUBLED IN SIZE SINCE ITS INCEPTION.

NOW IT’S TIME TO TAKE IT THE NEXT STEP.  THIS FALL WILL MARK OUR FIRST EVER HIGH SCHOOL GARAGE BAND THAT WILL OCCUR DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR.  WELL, LET ME CORRECT MYSELF.  THERE MAY BE TWO HIGH SCHOOL BANDS STARTING THIS FALL.

THE BANDS WILL BE DIRECTED BY KRIS STAUFFER WHO HAS HELPED COACH THE MIDDLE SCHOOL GROUPS FOR EIGHT YEARS NOW.  KRIS WHO ONCE DIRECTED THE LIVE ENTERTAINMENT DEPARTMENT AT VALLEYFAIR AMUSEMENT PARK AND CURRENTLY PERFORMS AND TEACHES AS A FREELANCE MUSICIAN IN THE TWIN CITIES IS ABOUT AS HIGHLY QUALIFIED OF AN INSTRUCTOR AS YOU COULD HOPE FOR.  HIS KNOWLEDGE OF MUSIC AND HIS ABILITY TO TEACH AND WORK WITH YOUNG PEOPLE IS INCREDIBLE.  

THE BANDS WILL START MEETING SOON AT THE HOMES OF THE BAND MEMBERS.  SONGS WILL BE CHOSEN IN A COLLABORATIVE FASHION WITH KRIS AND THE BAND MEMBERS.  THERE MAY EVEN BE SOME ORIGINALS THAT COME OUT OF THESE PROJECTS.  STUDENTS WILL CONTINUE TO LEARN TECHNIQUE, THEORY, HOW TO COMMUNICATE AND SOLVE ISSUES WITHIN A BAND, AND OF COURSE MANY SONGS THAT THEY WILL PERFORM AT A VARIETY OF VENUES.  

THE HOPE IS THAT STUDENTS WHO WANTED TO KEEP DOING THE GARAGE BAND THING AFTER MIDDLE SCHOOL WILL NOW HAVE THAT OPPORTUNITY IN AN ENVIRONMENT THAT WILL HELP THEM GROW AND PROSPER AS MUSICIANS.
