SONGER STUDIO
COUNTRY BLUEGRASS BAND
The District 112 Country Bluegrass Band is open to students in grades 6-8 at the three district middle schools.  There are two sessions of Country/Bluegrass Band and both are directed by Eric Songer.  The fall/winter session of Country/Bluegrass Band is an auditioned group that meets on Monday afternoons.  The band performs at local coffee shops and other fun venues around the southwest metro area.  The summer band is not an auditioned group that meets on Tuesday afternoons.  They perform at Chaska River City Days.

Country/Bluegrass Band is open to students who sing, play guitar, play keyboards, play banjo, play mandolin, play violin, play bass guitar and play drum set.  The bands typically work on three to five songs.  The music varies from traditional bluegrass music to current contemporary country hits.  In addition to learning the music so that the bands can perform, students learn a wealth of music knowledge including theory, chord progressions, form, soloing techniques, reading music/chords/tabs, and listening and imitating.  We also spend time teaching students stage presence, running their own band without direction and being able to move from song to song quickly at a performance.

The Country/Bluegrass Band started in the fall of 2007.  It was initiated by banjo player Philip Ireland.  Three other members of that original group were vocalist Kate Erickson, violinist Hannah Potter and guitarist Bennett Johnson.  The original group held their first performance at an orchestra concert that fall.  The band continued the following summer and performed in the park in Chaska.  When the original members of the band moved on to high school in the fall of 2010, we decided to continue working with the core group which gave themselves the name Philip & The Pherns.  The group has recorded an EP at McNally Smith Studios, opened for Monroe Crossing and played at events such as the Carver County Fair and the Minnesota Music Educators Convention.  In the summer of 2011, a second generation Country/Bluegrass band was born and performed at River City Days.  This band continued during the 2011-12 school year and summer.  Now the third generation is in full effect.

The current Country/Bluegrass Band session is Mondays Dec. 3-Feb. 11 from 3:45-4:45 p.m. in the CMSW Band Room. If you were chosen, please sign up before the first rehearsal at www.ce4all.org. http://www.ce4all.orgshapeimage_3_link_0
